Wireless

Wireless access is a viable solution for those who need the flexability to roam from room to room within their business or home without the hassle of running ethernet cable to each room. Net Access does not provide wireless setup or wireless troubleshooting, however, we would like to provide documentation to assist our customers in understanding the technology.

When you purchase a wireless router there will be documentation on how to integrate your wireless router with your existing DSL equipment.
What frequency does wireless B & G use?: Both use the 2.4 Ghz signal. If you have a 2.4 Ghz phone you may experience spotty signal. You may need to change the channel your phone or wireless router uses. This can be done on the router within the settings.

What are the different wireless standards?: 802.11b and 802.11g are the most commonly used wireless standards. B operates at 11 Mbps while G communicates at 54 Mbps. There are also other G products available with higher bandwidth. There are many other standards as well, however, they have specific uses which are infrequently used.

What is a SSID?: This is an acronym for Service Set Identifier. In laymen terms it is the name of your wireless network. If you plug in a Netgear wireless router with factory settings it will set the SSID to "Netgear". It is highly recommended that you rename it to something else. What you name it is your choice.

What is broadcast?: It is recommended that you do not broadcast your wireless signal. If you broadcast anyone with a wireless laptop can see the presence of your router. If you do not broadcast then you will need to specify the SSID in your wireless settings.

WEP or WPA?: Both of these are encryption methods to secure your wireless network. WEP is an older security method which is not as secure as WPA. For further information on adding security to your home wireless network review CNet's Networking & Wireless Tutorial.
