Reducing Virtual Vault Usage

Computers have an uncanny habit of dying when you need them most. Net Access will allow you to continue backups even if you exceed you’re allotted space. It is important to check your usage to avoid high overusage charges. You can check your usage by accessing your Customer Portal.

Below is additional information on how you can limit your back-up usage.

A. Check Revision Threshold

Most overusage is caused by keeping too many revisions of files. To lower the default revision level please launch the Vault Monitor (Start->All Programs->Net Access Corporation ->The Vault->The Vault Monitor), select Preferences, Revision Rules Settings, and then lower the default revision level (to 0, 1, or 2 for example). Lowering this to zero will keep ONLY the LATEST version of each of your files. This is the optimal option for using no extra space for file revisions. Most customers will set the revision rule to 2 or 3. To see how much space you would save, select Run Revision Rules below, then select Run Stats.

B. Review Remote Files/Folders and Server Usage

To review a listing of all files that are backed up on the remote backup servers, please select Start->All Programs->Net Access Corporation ->The Vault->The Vault Monitor. Select "Restore Files" and then you can browse a directory listing of the files stored on the remote NAC Backup servers. Right click each folder within restore files and select Properties. You should then see the compressed size of each folder. You can then narrow down to which folders and files are using too much space on our servers.

C. Remove Remote Stray Files

You can run a stray files sync which will remove all files from our servers that do not exist on yours anymore OR are not selected within a backupset OR matches a global exclude. Please do not run this if you think that you have accidentally deleted any files locally. Select Delete Files within the The Vault Monitor, the Backup Sets tab, and then select Stray Files. Please uncheck the first checkbox for "prompt for each file" and then check the rest of the check boxes. Then, select "Remove Stray Files" (lower right) to start the sync. If the sync is interrupted at anytime, feel free to start it again and it will continue where it left off.

Please note: Usage statistics are calculated daily and your latest usage will be reflected in tomorrow's calculation. You can check your usage the next day by logging into the customer portal. You can also run the "Plan Optimizer" to select the most optimal billing plan within our customer portal.
