Windows 95/98/ME Dial-Up Networking

Dial-Up Networking (DUN) is a Windows feature that lets your computer connect to the Internet, using a modem and a phone line. The steps below show how to configure your Dial-Up Networking connection. Before you start, you will need to select a local Net Access dial-up number.

Note: Before you configure Dial-Up Networking, please make sure that the dial-up number you have selected is local to you. We cannot be responsible for any long distance charges to your telephone bill. You should use our Local Lookup service to get a list of dial-up numbers, then contact your phone company and confirm that these numbers are local to the location from which you plan to connect to the Internet.

The process below will create a connection icon in your Dial-Up Networking folder. You may wish to make more than one connection icon (for example, you may want a list of alternate numbers to call, or your computer may be portable and you wish to dial in from more than one location). Just repeat the steps below for each phone number.

Step 1: Double click on the My Computer icon located on your desktop.

Step 2: Double click on the Dial-Up Networking icon.

Step 3: Double click on the My Computer icon.

Step 4: Type a name for the computer you are dialing into. You can type in whatever you want, but typing in "Net Access" or "NAC" will be helpful to our staff if you ever need to call us for technical support. If you are setting up connections for several different phone numbers as described above, you may wish to include the number in the connection name so you can easily identify it later - for example, "NAC - 555-1212".

Type The Name Of The Computer You Are Dialing

Step 5: Type in your area code and the local access number you will use to connect to us.

Enter The Number You Are Dialing

Step 6: Click on Finish. The connection is made and a new icon is added to your Dial-Up Networking folder.

Click On Finish

Step 7: Editing the Properties of the connection.

The first part of building the connection is done. With your right mouse button, click on the icon you just created; a small menu should pop up. With your left mouse button, click on Properties.

Right Click On Your New Connection Icon And Choose Properties

Step 8: The following screen appears. Click on the Server Types tab.

Click On The Server Types Tab

Clicking on the Configure button will take you to the Advanced Connection Settings (modem properties) window. It should look like the picture below, but if there are already entries in the 'Extra Settings' area, you should leave them in there. Click OK in the Advanced Connection Settings window when finished.

Step 9: Make sure that only the 'Enable software compression' and 'TCP/IP' options are checked. Typically, you will have to uncheck 'Log on to network,' 'NetBEUI,' and 'IPX/SPX Compatible.' The screen should look like the picture below. When you are done, click on the TCP/IP settings button.

Step 10: Click the 'Specify name server addresses' button and enter the Primary DNS number, 207.99.0.1, and the Secondary DNS number, 207.99.0.2. Also, make sure both checkboxes at the bottom are checked. The screen should look like the picture below. When you are done, click on the OK button and then click OK again. You will be put back in the Dial-Up Networking folder. You should now be ready to use Dial-Up Networking.
