Load balancing offers many benefits to an IT environment: increased capacity, increased redundancy and flexibility. Load Balancers monitor the servers in a web server farm; in the event of failure, the load balancer directs traffic to the remaining active servers in the farm. This allows the server farm to sustain multiple server failures without going down; it also makes it easy to take a server offline for maintenance or upgrades.
