Why Virtualize?
Virtualization allows multiple virtual machines, potentially each with a different Operating System, to run in total isolation, side-by-side, on the same physical hardware. Each virtual machine (VM) utilizes its own set of virtual hardware (eg CPU, RAM, NIC…). Each Operating System sees a consistent set of hardware regardless of the actual physical hardware. This hardware consistency means VMs can be moved between physical machines without regard to the underlying hardware configuration.

Virtual machines are encapsulated into a single file; this makes it possible to rapidly save, snapshot, or provision a virtual machine. Complete systems with fully configured applications can be deployed in second or moved between physical hardware in seconds with zero-downtime.

Introduction to Virtualization
Virtualization is simply an abstraction layer that acts as an intermediary between the physical hardware and the operating system. Virtualization provides greater flexibility in your environment as well as greater resource utilization. While there are several virtualization technologies in the marketplace, Net Access uses virtualization software from VMware. VMware software is utilized by 99 of the Fortune 100 companies and is the de-facto standard in virtualization.

Virtualization is nothing new; it was first introduced in the 1960s to allow for partitioning of large mainframe computers. The proliferation of low-cost PCs in the 1980s lead to a decline in the use of virtualization because it was “easier” and “cheaper” to throw hardware at any given problem. Today virtualization is the forefront of technology because it solves many common IT problems including: underutilization, escalating management costs, vulnerability to single hardware failure, legacy software, and escalating power costs.
